Abacoa is a 2,055-acre, master-planned, mixed-use community being built in Jupiter around the concepts and principles of Traditional Neighborhood Development. When fully built, Abacoa will be home to 6,073 residences and just over 3 million square feet of commercial space. The master plan, which resembles a patchwork quilt, melds homes, neighborhoods, schools, shops, offices, recreation sites, nature preserves into a cohesive richly textured whole. Each distinct aspect works to engage people more closely with their surroundings and each other. Many of the communities in Abacoa are within walking distance or a short bike or car ride to Town Center Abacoa with shops and restaurants, Rodger Dean Stadium, tennis courts and skate park. Every February Abacoa hosts Artigras, an Art Festival held in Town Center Abacoa with art, music, vendors and food. This family friendly event is a great weekend of fun. Also catch a baseball game at the Rodger Dean Stadium, home of the Palm Beach Cardinals and Jupiter Hammerheads, it is also the Spring Training site for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Florida Marlins.
Construction began in 1997 on land once owned by insurance tycoon and Palm Beach Gardens founder John D. MacArthur. Abacoa Development Company, a partnership of Cypress Realty and the MacArthur Foundation, was the master developer of the project. Abacoa Development Co. was headed by Nader Salour, who had been responsible for the development and construction aspects of BallenIsles Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens. Born and educated in England, Mr. Salour brought a wealth of experience in the supervision of the planning and development of large residential and commercial construction projects on three continents; in particular the development of raw land requiring complete new infrastructure.
As of 2009, there are seventeen neighborhoods with residences either completed or nearing completion. There are thriving business districts, with professional offices, restaurants, and retail stores.
Abacoa also houses a beautiful Golf Club. The golf course at Abacoa Golf Club was designed by Joe Lee and is known for its unique elevations, lush rolling fairways and scenic lakes. There is also a large putting area, an all-natural grass driving range and a beautiful clubhouse with multiple amenities including a bar and grill.
